The origin of the “Question Mark” moniker is obscure. One theory was that it had to do with who exactly was the secret sponsor of aircraft, which was later revealed to be Frenchman François Coty, founder of the cosmetics firm that carried his name. Another idea was that the question mark symbol simply meant that when this airplane took off its ultimate destination was often just a guess. Photo: A.A.S.</image:caption>

<image:caption>South Central Air Transport (SCAT) was a small commuter airline based out of Natchez, Mississippi. Formed in 1971, by Andrew Peabody, SCAT filled a niche that had been vacated by Southern Airways. The SCAT fleet consisted of 5 HP.137 Jetstreams, including two that had been modified with Pratt & Whitney PT-6 turboprop engines. SCAT went out of business in 1977. <image:caption>A very brief article in the February 1968 issue of “Air Force” magazine. As noted in the caption, the U.S. Air Force ordered 11 Handley Page Jetstreams - based on the UK military’s version Jetstream Mk. 3M - to be used a light transports under the designation C-10A. Handley Page folded operations before the airframes were completed, and all were broken up for scrap. Interestingly, the U.S. Air Force called for the use of an American engine - the Garrett AiResearch TPE331. This engine would years later go on to power the BAe J31 Jetstream.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Two Sikorsky SH-3A Sea Kings doing the primary mission the aircraft was design to do - hunt submarines. All other missions - search and rescue, logistics, etc.. - were secondary to antisubmarine warfare (ASW). The cable descending from the aircraft in the foreground (Sikorsky HSS-2/SH-3A, BuNo 149917, msn 61-187 ) is the Bendix AQS-10 dipping sonar. This sonar was what cut the Sea King out of the pack of other airborne ASW aircraft, allowing the Sea King a direct connection to the underwater environment. With a very minimum of data processing, a Sea King crew could quickly acquire and attack an enemy submarine. These two Sea Kings were assigned to Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron FIVE (HS-5) - the Nightdippers, and based aboard the USS Lake Champlain (CVS-39). In 1964, around the time that this photo was taken, the U.S. Navy was employing the concept of the Antisubmarine Carrier Air Group (CVSG), where an entire carrier (the CVS) and the embarked air group was tasked with hunting subs. Most of these air groups were gone by the early 1970s. The tail code “AT” indicates that HS-5 was then assigned to Antisubmarine Carrier Air Group FIFTY-FOUR (CVSG-54), which was established in May 1960, and ultimately disestablished in July 1972. <image:title>Sea King 61-601</image:title>
<image:caption>This Sikorsky Sea King (BuNo 149727, msn 61-162) started out as an HSS-2, and was then re-designated as SH-3A on 18 September 1962. It was ultimately upgraded to SH-3H specifications. The most outward indication that a Sea King airframe was upgrades to SH-3H specifications was the elongated sponsons, and in particular the right sponson that mounted the ASQ-81 Magnetic Anomaly Detector, and reeling machine. Seen here, the “MAD bird” (in yellow and red) is in the stowed position. By the way, the left sponson housed a multiple round smoke and flare launcher. Also seen here - in the “trail” position, is the AQS-13 dipping sonar. As mentioned elsewhere, this dipping sonar was what made the Sea King one of the most capable airborne sub hunters, as it allowed a direct connection with the undersea realm. In the active mode, one “ping” could give the Sea King crew the range and bearing to the sub, while a second ping a few moments later could give the crew the submarine’s course and speed. Thus, with range and bearing, course and speed, the crew had enough data to dial in the torpedo presetter, and launch the weapon - game over! The Sea King was used primarily for Inner Zone antisubmarine warfare. The Inner Zone, although the tactics change from time to time, was a 50-mile circle centered around the carrier. Outside of this radius, antisubmarine defense was the forte of fixed-wing, carrier-based sub hunter - Grumman S-2 Trackers in the old days which were replaced by the Lockheed S-3A Viking. The carrier based antisubmarine warfare team of the Sea King and the Viking was a formidable force. Throw in a couple of surface ships - frigates and destroyers - and this force becomes even more effective at protecting the carrier. Ever versatile - another mission assigned to the Sea King was anti-terrorist operations - preventing any terrorists in small boats from approaching the carrier. Note the flexible, plinth-mounted .50 caliber Browning M2 machine gun in the cargo door. The Sea King seen here was assigned to Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron FIVE (HS-5), part of Carrier Air Wing SEVEN (CVW-7), then embarked aboard the USS Dwight D Eisenhower (CVN-69), which was then underway on cruise in the Mediterranean Sea in 1988. <image:caption>Later on in the career of the SH-3H Sea King sub hunter the U.S. Navy modified several airframes for a strictly logistics mission. This entailed the removal of all the antisubmarine warfare related gear. Note in this photo, the MAD bird has been deleted. With this modification the SH-3H became the US-3H. Note, the aircraft was still perfectly capable of conducting Search and Rescue (SAR) operations. The Sea King seen here (BuNo 148971, msn 61-043) was originally one of the early SH-3A airframes, which was upgraded through the years to SH-3H specifications, until it was reassigned to utility duties as a US-3H. Assigned to Helicopter Support Squadron ONE ONE (HC-11), it is coming aboard the USS Milius (DDG-69) an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, then cruising as part of the USS Constellation (CV-64) Battle Group - 25 October 2002..
<image:caption>Fine in-flight study of a Vought F4U-5N Corsair night fighter, taken in April 1950, over the hills of Southern California. Clearly the most apparent indication that this is an F4U-5N is the radar pod on the starboard wing, which housed a version of the AN/APS-19 air intercept radar. Also clear in this photo are the four 20mm cannon muzzles, plus the gun camera port. A follow-on version of the Corsair night fighter was the F4U-5NL, the “L” indicating the airframe was optimized for cold weather operations. The “NP” tail code on this bird indicates it was assigned to VC-3. Photo NNAM</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a Keystone K-78 Patrician trimotor airliner - X-7962 - one of three prototypes - described as a Super-Air Liner - built back in the 1920s. It was a reasonably capable ship for its day - semi-speedy with a capacity of 20-24 passengers. To prove this, one of the Patricians set a payload record on 16 March 1929, flying out of Rogers Airfield, Los Angeles, lifting some 4,600 pounds to 10,200 feet. Piloted by Captain St Clair Streett, time to climb was 25 minutes. The payload consisted of two pilots, a mechanic and 33 girls. Despite this, the Patrician never went into production.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An outstanding image - via the great folks at the Lockheed Martin Archives, out in Palmdale, California - of Western Air Lines new Lockheed L188A Electra. MSN 1946, with the registration N7135C, this Electra was delivered to Western Air Lines on 20 April 1959, and flew with the company for the next decade. After that, it was in the fleet of a few various companies, including Zantop Airline, before being bought by Reeve Aleutian Airways in August of 1983. In 1986, it was withdrawn from use and used as spare parts. Photo: Lockheed Martin</image:caption>
